to splice (v)– to join, so two become one
to get spliced - old-fashioned informal - to get married
Come get spliced aboard
the Schooner Huron Jewel.
Tie the knot in this most romantic and unique venue.
A tall ship wedding – your wedding, with sails up and water lapping upon the hull as you sail amidst the spectacular islands of the Upper Peninsula; the sights and sounds of the most romantic day of your life later will be etched firmly upon your memory.
Perfect for those who want an intimate, affordable, and truly exceptional place to get married or to renew vows.
Here also is a terrific option for those who want to elope or have a special commitment ceremony.
Whether it is under sail or at dockside, we can help you customize your ceremony to match your dreams.
Ceremonies
Ceremony Under Sail: From Drummond Island Yacht Haven, the trip lasts 2 hours and we can accommodate up to six passengers. The ceremony is performed at anchor in a picturesque location or weather permitting under sail. We then blow the conch shell, fire the cannon and hoist the sails and turn the helm over to the newly joined couple to take their first journey together.
Dock Side: When you want to share your special day with a larger group of family and friends - we can accommodate up to 12 guests aboard for the ceremony and unlimited guests watching from dockside. Afterwards we take six of you on a brief sail and return you to dock.
Fee: $750 includes 2 hour use of the schooner, Captain Hugh’s officiant fee, a customized ceremony, and personalized wedding certificate.
Add-ons
Extra time: Want time aboard to prepare? Will everyone want a tour of the ship? Book more time for before and after the ceremony at dockside for preparations, photography and enjoying the ship. Available in two hour increments.
Sail-away: Do you love the water? Love to sail? Want more time aboard and under sail? We can do that! Half-day and full day excursions are available for sailing.
Special destinations: Are you a lighthouse lover or wide-open-water fan? With additional time added on to your package we can sail you to extra special spots for your ceremony, such as the DeTour Reef Lighthouse or into the open waters of Lake Huron. Or we can come to a location other than Drummond Island Yacht Haven. Inquire for details.
Reception delivery: Want to make a stunning entry to your reception? Many reception venues are located close to the water. Inquire about sailing to your reception.
Photography: You want your special day captured in all its splendor and glory and you want as many of your family and friends aboard. Don’t put your dear friend ashore because you had to have the photographer as one of the “guests.” We can do it for you - our First Mate, Julie Covert, is a professional photographer and can create a photo package for you to commemorate your spectacular event. Inquire for details.
Photos Only Package: Wedding photos on board (between chapel & reception) with your own photographer - 2 hours.
Pre/post-wedding activities: Looking for something for your guests to do, why not take them out sailing? Schooner Huron Jewel is a terrific place to take your wedding party out before the big day. Entertain those early arrivers/late stayers and book a few hours or a full day of mini-trips of sailing.
Catering, music, and lodging: More than likely you’ll be coming from a distance; we can give you suggestions on local providers to take care of all your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost?
The base rate for the use of the schooner and the ceremony is $750. Additional two-hour blocks of time are available at a rate of $390.
Can I have my event catered?
Yes. If you need a caterer, we can help you find an appropriate caterer who can have access to our inspected galley.
Can I bring my own cake and food?
Absolutely, please consult with us at least a week in advance so we can be appropriately set up for you.
Can we have a champagne toast or bring alcohol aboard?
Yes, you may have alcohol aboard Schooner Huron Jewel; it is bring-your-own. Even though we do not have a liquor license and are not able to sell it, we can help you serve it. Please consult us about this.
What if we’d like music or some entertainment?
Because our 120V electrical system is limited, we only allow battery-operated or acoustic music when not at the dockside. Please inquire further if you’d like music so we can help you plan accordingly.
What about tips:
Gratuities for the crew should be like a restaurant, 15-20% depending on service, and should be in cash the day of the wedding.
Who will be my wedding officiant?
Captain Hugh Covert is an ordained multi-denominational minister who can officiate your wedding for you and help you complete and send off your marriage application. You are also welcome to have your own officiant aboard and perform the wedding. Bear in mind that this person counts as one of the six allowed guests.
Where do I get my marriage license?
Where you get your license depends upon where your residency is. We are under the rules of Chippewa County, Michigan. Information is available online at https://www.chippewacountymi.gov/clerk-marriage-license-applications. If you live in Michigan, contact your local county clerk. If you are from out of state, you must apply in Chippewa County. Contact (906) 635-6300 for more information.
What is your reservation policy?
We require a 50% deposit to hold a reservation. The balance is due no later than 60 days before the date of the event.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations are accepted up to 60 days before the event and deposits are returned in full. Cancellations received less than 60 days before sailing will be returned if space can be resold.
What if the weather is bad?
We watch the weather, even days before to make sure we only go sailing in safe weather. That being said, like any outdoor wedding, it is important to have a backup plan. Your first backup plan is that if it rains, we will still go out and either put up an awning if it is not too windy or go below to perform the ceremony in the ship’s salon. If we cancel, we will either reschedule or provide you with a refund. Remember, it’s good luck for it to rain on your wedding day, as rain makes the knot stronger.
