Watch Schooner Huron Jewel be built
December 2016 – hull being rolled over.
Click on a photo to enlarge.
Capt Hugh begins preparations for rolling her over.
Building the wedges.
Testing out a wedge.
Steve Peine works on creating holders for the rollers.
Roller from the B-52 bomber hanger door is installed to help with “sliding” the hull.
Eric Walton begins removing the bulkhead supports.
Julie sands the “runway” clear of epoxy.
Moving part of the strong back out of the way so rollers can roll.
Beginning of the lifting.
Jacking her up.
Bruce MacGregor places a wedge.
More wedging.
She gets slid over towards the far side of the boathouse.
As close as we can get.
Adjusting the chain falls.
And more adjusting.
Bruce MacGregor watches Capt Hugh do some chainsaw carpentry on the framing.
Rounding over the square wheel.
Placing a set of rollers under the schooner.
Wedges in place to prevent her from rolling over too quickly.
Steve puts a Hi-Lift jack in place to get more height than the bottle jack could give.
It takes all Capt Hugh’s force to work his jack.
Looks precarious but is stable.
Cousins – Steve and Capt Hugh – Hi-Lift jack up the hull.
Carefully balanced and braced.
During the rolling of the hull.
The rollers get removed, for now.
Chain falls.
Adjusting rollers
Sliding her over is easy.
On the far side of the boathouse on her side.
His calculations were accurate – cleared the trusses!
Roller adjusting.
More chainsaw carpentry.
Removing the brace.
Ready for let down.
Adjusting rollers.
Almost down.
Time to level her out – bow to stern.
Checking for plumb.
